KIMBERLY

I was filled with so much apprehension when we finally arrived at the park. We got out of the car to air filled with the delicious aroma of food mixed with flowers. The scenery itself was breathtaking.

“You should see it at sunrise,” Corey said in a low tone as he passed me by with the bag of ice and made his way to the laughing group of people who sat on blankets in the evening sun.

I still cannot understand why I react to him the way I do. It's like my body betrays my resolve. Because earlier, in front of the car, I would have given everything for him to kiss me. And when he did not . . . I almost begged. And it made me realize that his honor and pride wouldn’t let him make the first move, since I was the one that said I did not want to get involved. Now, if I wanted anything to happen, I was going to have to take the first step.

“Hey, aren’t you coming?” he called out when he observed I’d spaced out and did not follow him.

“Yeah, sure. I’m coming,” I called in response as I made my way towards them.

He dropped the bag of ice in the cooler and waited for me to join him before he made the introductions. He did not need to. From their faces, I could already make the connections. His brothers sat with their wives as they unwrapped the food. First was Sean; he came forward and offered his hand. His eyes twinkled, and I could guess he had plans to tease his brother later about me. But he looked happy to have me, and he pulled me into a warm hug when he expressed how glad they all were to have me there.

Corey was right about Michelle; she is beautiful. Insanely gorgeous. But she had smiling eyes that glowed with genuineness when she rose to say hi to me. She looked at me with masked curiosity, but I could sense she meant no harm by it.

Next was Ethan, who looked every inch as handsome as Corey. All his brothers had those unmistakable facial features and distinct blue eyes that made them irresistible. If they were not soldiers, they would have made really good models. Pierre would say, “It's in the genes, baby. True beauty is in the genes.” Ethan’s wife, Leah, had one of those faces that looked like they were born for tiaras. Even as she struggled to keep up with her energetic toddler, who wanted to do everything at once, she still managed it with a grace and efficiency that astounded me.

And June just got up and gave me a hug when Corey got to her. She introduced me to her daughter, Adele, a pretty child dressed in red shorts and top. Her pigtails looked adorable as she asked to touch my hair, announcing that my golden tresses were so ‘pweetty’. She chose to stay by my side, and I was so flattered that I hugged her so close to me.
